summer white & cactus

WHIMSICAL. That would be the one word that I would use to describe this look. When it comes to my own personal style, whimsical is not at the top of the list in how I would describe it. Yet, I love this fun outfit that’s perfect for a summer barbecue or day at the beach (T-minus 11 days until the official start of summer).

The focus of this outfit truly is this cactus shirt from Madewell. Since the cacti are smaller in scale and embroidered (instead of printed), it makes the top more elevated instead of something that would easily tossed aside after the summer season is over. Its oversized shape keeps it casual and can be partially tucked in or knotted. It pairs well with my distressed, bright white denim. On cooler nights, tie the shirt at the waist, pair it with high-waisted black jeans, and add a cropped leather jacket.

Neck scarves have been rotating back en vogue for the past couple months. Since I was young, I have always loved bandannas/neck scarves. My grandmother would tie a silk scarf around her neck with such a practiced hand. Because of her, I have come to associate the neck scarf with simple refinement and grace. I have a small but cherished collection of silk and cotton scarves, some of which I only debut on special occasions. This one from J.Crew adds the perfect pop of blue with pink and mauve details. Add a pair of cat eye sunglasses, a leather weather watch, and a topknot to complete this casual but classic look.
