Happy Summer! I hope everyone enjoyed their 4th of July. With the recent festivities, we are very much in the thick of summer. Does anyone have any fun travel plans coming up? For me, I have a couple fun weekends planned, a music festival, camping, and a trip out to North Carolina (my first time in the southeast area of the US!).

In spite of a full schedule and lots of places to go, I love reviewing and comparing various makeup formulas on the go. Much like all of you, lipstick is my favorite makeup item to acquire. It’s so much fun to test out the different colors and formulas, and it’s not uncommon to find me with an arm full of swatches examining the subtleties in tone. Lip color is such a simple but powerful way to transform your look completely. LOVE. Today, I rounded up my top five favorite summer lipsticks of the moment. They’re perfect for a barbecue, summer wedding, or night out on the town.

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution in Miranda May is a great non-drying satin matte formula that is thin and buildable on the lips. The punchy coral color has a slight shimmer when you look at the bullet, however, when applied it does not look glittery but gives a three-dimensional effect. I like wearing it when I am a bit more tanned so it doesn’t wash me out.

YSL Glossy Lip Stain in 206 Misty Pink: I have featured this unique formula before on the blog. It has a watery consistency that is quite glossy on the lips, which will dry down after a couple hours (if not eating or drinking) and leave behind a beautiful stain. This doesn’t have the staying power of the other formulas, but it gives a subtle effect even in such a knockout shade.

Mac Lipstick in See Sheer (Lustre): Mac was one of the first brands that ignited my fascination with lipsticks. With multiple finishes and countless colors, I remember spending a couple hours trying on different colors at the Mac counter. The lustre finish has a glossy, sheer finish that is perfect for an unfussy summer look. Compared to the Charlotte Tilbury one, this one is less saturated, more glossy, and has more of an orange undertone rather than a coral, pink one.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery: This is my all-year-round red. Not too warm, not too cool, it’s a deeper true red. I especially love it for the holidays and special occasions. Fiery made it unto my summer list, because I like to wear it differently during this season. Instead of applying it normally for full opacity, I dot it on my lips, blend it out with my finger, and create a stained look. It gives a romantic feel and lip pencil is not necessary. I use a liquid lipstick in place of a lip stain, because they tend to have a longer staying power. It’s especially nice for nights out or weddings.

Nars Velvet Lip Glide in Stripped with Mac Lip Pencil in Boldly Bare: This lip combo is a recent discovery of mine. The Nars Velvet Lip Glide is another one of my favorite unique formulas. It has a whipped texture that is a like a “semi-matte gloss.” It remains shiny until it wears off after an hour and leaves the color behind without drying out my lips. Normally, Stripped is a shade that is too beige for me and gives the dreaded “concealer lips.” However, layered with a pink brown lip pencil, it makes a gorgeous nude lip color with just enough warmth to bring me back to life. The Mac lip pencils have a drier formula that complements the lip glide without smudging and migrating outside the lips.
