trash talk: fall 2017

It’s time to talk trash again! In case you didn’t see Part 1, the Trash Talk series is where I share all the makeup, skincare, body care, and hair products that I have finished up recently. I have accumulated these items from the past 5 months. Since most of the items have been completely used up, I have a good idea of how each products performs. Everything is divided into 5 categories: 1) Basics 2) Did Not Work for Me 3) Okay 4) Good 5) Great/Will Repurchase. I also provide thorough reviews of my favorite products.

In addition, I have been in a mini de-cluttering and organizational mood. I am getting rid of a handful of products (most of them unused) in efforts to keep my collection “under control.” Also, I want to have a good idea of what I currently have and what I want to add when the Sephora VIB Sale starts today. Come back next week to get my sale recommendations. If you can’t wait, feel free to comment or email me with inquiries. In the meantime, let’s look through these empties. Out with the old, in the with the new!

Did Not Work for MeProcessed with VSCO with a5 preset

I’m still on a quest for a drugstore/affordable brush tip liquid eyeliner that comes in dark brown. Everything I have tried either has a tricky applicator that makes it difficult to draw a precise line or it smudges, fades, or transfers. If you’ve found one, leave it down below in comments. Help!

In Part 1 of Trash Talk, I raved about the K-Palette Real Lasting Eyeliner  (pictured above) for its saturated color and budge-proof formula. I had received the eyeliner as a gift from my sister from when she visited Japan. The one shown in the empties here was purchased in a beauty shop in Little Tokyo in LA. This one, unfortunately, was horrible. It was patchy and dried out really quickly. I think this sat on the shelves for a while before I made the purchase so it didn’t perform as well as my previous one.

The Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence is an excellent sunscreen that is lightweight, affordable, and does not leave a white cast or residue. This is a good daily SPF to use during the summer or for those with oily skin. Since the weather is getting cooler, I switched to something that provides a bit more moisture (shared below).

Great/Will RepurchaseProcessed with VSCO with a5 preset

These ones are the winners that performed well and that I will be repurchasing (or have already repurchased):

  • Dr. Teal’s Pink Himalayan Mineral Soak: In addition to the foaming bath, I also love the epsom salts from Dr. Teal’s. The Pink Himalayan bath salts is a new scent to me, but I enjoy the citrus blend. Nothing helps to relax the mind like a nice hot bath with these aromatherapy bath products.
  • Beauty Blender & Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge: I use a makeup sponge to apply my foundation almost exclusively. It gives a natural finish and lighter coverage. The Beauty Blender is the original makeup sponge; I use the round end to pounce foundation into the skin and the tapered end for around the nose or for concealer application under the eyes. Of all the other makeup sponges, the Real Techniques sponge is most comparable (although I like the Beauty Blender the better). It a third of the cost of the Beauty Blender and has a flat end. I find the Beauty Blender more durable and applies product more seamlessly than the Complexion Sponge.
  • Pond’s Dry Skin Cream: I have used this cream for years. It has a thick texture so a little goes a long way. This is geared towards people with dry skin and is best for nighttime use. Personally, I will use it during both day and night time when my skin is really dry. It’s nourishing without too many active ingredients that may exacerbate sensitive skin. I go into detail in my Affordable Skin & Body Care post.
  • Lubriderm Body Lotion: I love body lotions like this…moisturizing, non-scented, and absorbs well into the skin.

Great/Will Repurchase (cont.)

  • AG Hair Care Colour Savour Conditioner: Ever since I started coloring my hair, I have changed my hair care products to ones that prolong the vibrancy of my color as well as protect my hair. This conditioner (I also use the shampoo) is sulfate and paraben-free does a great job in making my hair feel healthy.
  • Pantene Pro-V Dry Shampoo: This recent discovery has quickly become my new favorite dry shampoo. It does not leave those pesky white marks that are difficult to blend out. It easily absorbs oil, gives subtle volume, and has a pleasant but not overpowering smell. Extra plus, it’s $5 and can be found at the drugstore. I’ve repurchased another one.
  • Son & Park Beauty Water: This is a sneak peak at my Sephora VIB sale recommendations! This Kbeauty cult product is refreshing to the skin and helps to nourish. Made with willow bark and papaya extract, it mildly exfoliates skin for smoother, brighter skin. In a pinch, it removes residue makeup well.
  • Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray: This is another favorite (sensing a theme here?). This setting spray is the perfect last step to meld makeup into the skin so it doesn’t look powdery. It also helps to prolong you makeup as well, especially for special occasions or nights out.
  • Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper: The brush tip is just right for a precise cat wing and it does not fade or smudge.
  • Glossier Boy Brow: One of my two favorite brow gels. The spoolie is small to capture all hairs and it’s soft while evenly dispersing the product. It makes the eyebrows a bit fuller, more defined, but still natural. No crunchy brows here!
  • Glossier Balm Dot Com: I’ve used up 2 of these and am now onto my 3rd tube. There are six different flavors including mint and rose, but my favorite is the original one. It’s a good all-purpose balm, but I mainly use it as a lip balm.
  • The Face Shop Natural Sun Calming Sun Cream: This Korean sunscreen has eco-certified organic ingredients and is formulated for sensitive skin. Its texture is as its name states, a cream. However, it’s moisturizing for me and does not leave a white cast.

Items I Am DeclutteringProcessed with VSCO with a5 preset

The above are items that I am moving out of my collection and giving it to a lucky friend. Most of the products are unused or have only been swatched once or twice. I chose to pass them, because they weren’t being used due to the color, formula, or they weren’t convenient for my makeup application preferences. Admittedly, I’ve continued to de-clutter since I took these photos and have added to this collection. It feels nice to purge a bit. Hopefully all the holiday sales won’t send me over the edge again!

In total, I getting rid of 66 products (52 empties and 14 decluttered):

  • 4 eyeliners
  • 1 gel eyeliner
  • 3 mascaras
  • 1 brow gel
  • 2 primers (1 deluxe -sized, 1 full-sized)
  • 2 foundations
  • 1 BB cream
  • 1 CC cream
  • 3 concealers
  • 1 stick cream blush
  • 1 cream eyeshadow quad
  • 7 individual eyeshadows
  • 1 lip balm
  • 2 lipglosses
  • 3 lipsticks
  • 5 liquid lipsticks
  • 1 setting spray
  • 4 packs of makeup remover wipes
  • 2 packs of cotton rounds
  • 1 body lotion
  • 1 deodorant
  • 2 dry shampoos
  • 1 hair conditioner
  • 1 travel-sized contact solution
  • 4 sheet masks
  • 1 bag of bath salts
  • 3 beauty sponges
  • 2 sunscreens
  • 1 toner
  • 1 deluxe-sized serum
  • 1 cleansing oil
  • 1 moisturizer
  • 1 liquid brush cleaner
  • 2 perfume samples

I hope I did you all proud will actually using up items, and streamlining my collection. Have a wonderful November weekend. It’s really starting to get California cool here, and it’s making me all kinds of joyful.
